Philosophy of Metaphysics

Patrycja: I will use the book “Philosophy” by Jenny Teichman and Katherine C.Evans to explain the definition.
How do things exist? one thing is made by smaller things. Like the diamond, which is made of other material. Something exists because another thing exists.. In the book there is written “A city exists because the houses and roads exist. The landscape exists because the mountains and trees and rivers exist. The world exists of small parts which create it. They have to be in order and in configuration.”[1]
The philosophers said that if something we can think about.. it is possible that it can exists.. like St. Clouse or Elfs. But the commentary of Bertrand Russel said that we have to have strong/ cold sense of reality. So I think his way of thinking is true one.. There is something like imagination.. a lot of people have a big imagination.. we can not think that Elf exists if nobody never saw it.

Charles:
Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that deals with the first principles of things, including abstract concepts such as:
·         Being
·         knowing
·         substance
·         cause
·         identity
·         time
·         space
Yes, you are correct that there is a principle that underlies these things that science could not explain.

Patrycja: Somebody said that there is answer for everything, but the science is not so progressed yet to explain everything. The thought was  about God existence. In the movie about biography of Hawking the last phrase is: “there is no answer about existence of everything”, explaining that it is possible that the God exists[2] but in the book “Philosophy” Jenny Teichman said that the science isn’t enough progressed to explain existence of everything… so he wants to say that probably he doesnt exist and in the futute the science will explain from where world and we came..

Charles: Metaphysics came from two Greek words, “meta” means beyond and “physica” means material things thus metaphysics is beyond material things. Question like what a chair is does not mean by stating the descriptions and features or the components of a chair. In metaphysics, it is beyond the features and components of the chair. Let me give you a teaser of what metaphysics is. Chair becomes a chair because of its chair-ness… a chair is made of its essence, the chairness. It is through its chairness that makes it a chair. The chair we see or touch is beyond that one. If we go to Aristotle, you will understand what I mean ☺ we will get through that soon.
